{"id":2368,"date":"2026-05-12T08:55:42","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T08:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbn.ctb.upm.es\/?page_id=2368"},"modified":"2026-05-12T08:58:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T08:58:39","slug":"coadvisorship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lbn.ctb.upm.es\/index.php\/coadvisorship\/","title":{"rendered":"Coadvisorship"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-page\" data-elementor-id=\"2368\" class=\"elementor elementor-2368\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-25dae73 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"25dae73\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9e68d7c elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"9e68d7c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d7f5ceb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d7f5ceb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>Date of last update: 2025-12-01<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-77d126c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"77d126c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If you want to add a co-advisor to your thesis, both you and your thesis advisor must consider the following.<\/p><p>The CAPDIB does not have specific criteria for admitting new professors to the program and is governed by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upm.es\/sfs\/Rectorado\/Vicerrectorado%20de%20Investigacion\/Doctorado\/Normativa\/Procedimiento_alta-baja_investigador_en_PD.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>UPM regulations for researcher admissions<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><p>In summary, the UPM regulations indicate the following:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Having an active research accreditation (<em>sexenio<\/em>)<\/strong>\u00a0or, alternatively, presenting 5 scientific contributions from the last 5 years along with their quality indicators.<\/li><li>Being affiliated with the proposing university or, alternatively, having a specific collaboration agreement.<\/li><li>It requires the express authorization of the responsible authority of the university or organization from which the applicant originates.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fc43aa5 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"fc43aa5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ae831d3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ae831d3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Steps for admission as a program professor<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf46c08 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cf46c08\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol><li>Researchers who wish to be admitted for the program must write to the Coordinator (<code>pd.ingbiomed@upm.es<\/code>) informing them that they wish to join and providing: their\u00a0<strong>first and last names<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>ID number<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>email address<\/strong>.<\/li><li>They will be contacted back and given access to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upm.es\/thesis\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Thesis<\/a>\u00a0platform to follow the steps.<\/li><li>The applicant researcher fills in the registration form on Thesis\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upm.es\/thesis\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Thesis<\/a>.<\/li><\/ol><div class=\"markdown-heading\"><h3 class=\"heading-element\">UPM Regulations for Researcher Admissions<\/h3><a id=\"user-content-upm-regulations-for-researcher-admissions\" class=\"anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/capdibupm\/normativa\/wiki\/Coadvisorship#upm-regulations-for-researcher-admissions\" aria-label=\"Permalink: UPM Regulations for Researcher Admissions\"><\/a><\/div><p>In particular, attention should be paid to point\u00a0<strong>&#8220;3. PROCEDIMIENTO DE SOLICITUD DE ALTA&#8221;<\/strong>, which states that: the\u00a0<strong>PhD<\/strong>\u00a0interested in joining as a researcher in a doctoral program will submit their application \u2014this step currently corresponds to the application\u00a0<strong>through Thesis<\/strong>\u00a0mentioned earlier\u2014 to the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program, attaching:<\/p><ul><li><p>The\u00a0<strong>researcher admission form<\/strong>\u00a0for the doctoral program, duly completed (this happens automatically when submitting the application through Thesis).<\/p><\/li><li><p>Justification that the researcher meets the\u00a0<strong>specific criteria<\/strong>\u00a0of the doctoral program for supervising theses (<strong>in CAPDIB we do not have<\/strong>, they are those of UPM: research accreditation or 5 contributions, and affiliation to a center).<\/p><\/li><li><p>An\u00a0<strong>updated CV<\/strong>\u00a0reflecting their scientific production, supervised doctoral theses, and direction of projects or contracts. Additionally, the applicant&#8217;s ORCID record must be updated and include the relevant information.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Express authorization to participate in the doctoral program issued by the responsible authority of the university, organization, or company from which the applicant originates.<\/strong>\u00a0This varies by university. Some have implemented mechanisms to grant permissions, but others do not, leading to uncertainties, and inquiries must be made. There have been cases where the signature of the doctoral program coordinator at its university, or its Vice-Rector for Research.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>If everything goes well, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program will include it in its next meeting.\u00a0<strong>CAPDIB only provides<\/strong>\u00a0favorable or unfavorable information, but\u00a0<strong>does not make the decision<\/strong>\u00a0regarding the admission of new researchers, as it is elevated and\u00a0<strong>decided by CAD-TIC<\/strong>\u00a0in its next meeting. You can check the meeting dates on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsit.upm.es\/estudios\/doctorado\/comite-area-doctoral-tic-comision-doctorado-eid-upm.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">ETSIT website<\/a>.<\/p><div class=\"markdown-heading\">\u00a0<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b61d98b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b61d98b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Assigning a Tutor (Advisor), Director, and how to request a change<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-61abd3c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"61abd3c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Although the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/capdibupm\/normativa\/wiki\/Supervision-commitment-agreement\"><strong>supervision agreement<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has been signed by the Tutor and the Director, in Thesis it is done in two steps:<\/p><ol><li>The Tutor is assigned in Thesis. This is the person who has signed as Tutor in the supervision agreement. The Tutor must be from the UPM and is the person who, among other things, is responsible for guiding the student through the administrative procedures. The Tutor is also Director.<\/li><li>If there is a co-director, once they have been registered in the Doctoral Program, and once the Tutor has been assigned in Thesis by the CAPD,\u00a0<strong>it will be the student who initiates the procedure in Thesis to request co-direction<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>There can only be one co-director<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ol><div class=\"markdown-heading\"><h3 class=\"heading-element\">Change of co-director or tutor<\/h3><a id=\"user-content-change-of-co-director-or-tutor\" class=\"anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/capdibupm\/normativa\/wiki\/Coadvisorship#change-of-co-director-or-tutor\" aria-label=\"Permalink: Change of co-director or tutor\"><\/a><\/div><p>The change of\u00a0<strong>co-director is requested by the student in Thesis<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The change of\u00a0<strong>Tutor\/Advisor is NOT implemented in Thesis<\/strong>\u00a0and it is necessary to sign a\u00a0<strong>letter<\/strong>\u00a0(there is no template) with the signatures of the\u00a0<strong>outgoing supervisor, the incoming supervisor, and the student<\/strong>, requesting the change, for evaluation by the CAPD. Send \ud83d\udce7 the signed document to the Program Chair and Secretary:<\/p><ul><li>Doctoral Program in Biomedical Engineering:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:pd.ingbiomed@upm.es\">pd.ingbiomed@upm.es<\/a><\/li><li>Program Secretary, Josu\u00e9 Pag\u00e1n Ortiz:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:j.pagan@upm.es\">j.pagan@upm.es<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8df8571 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"8df8571\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-91eacb7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"91eacb7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Co-advisorship request<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24341bb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"24341bb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Once the new advisor has been admitted, the student, from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upm.es\/thesis\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Thesis<\/strong><\/a>, must initiate the co-advisorship request. There, they can\u00a0<strong>select the name of the new thesis advisor<\/strong>, and they will be asked to provide the following information:<\/p><ul><li>Indicate whether it is: (i)\u00a0<strong>interdisciplinary<\/strong>\u00a0(most of the time), (ii) inter-institutional, (iii) international, or (iv) training (if the current advisor is a training professor).<\/li><li>Knowledge field of the current advisor.<\/li><li>Knowledge field of the proposed advisor.<\/li><li>Justification for the collaboration of the current advisor.<\/li><li>Justification for the collaboration of the proposed co-advisor.<\/li><\/ul><p>In the justification for the need to add a co-advisor to their thesis, it should be made clear that it\u00a0<strong>complements the current supervision<\/strong>, and that the\u00a0<strong>contribution is orthogonal<\/strong>\u00a0to the current supervision, not a duplication of it. The new thesis advisor should justify their interest in participating in the thesis supervision, explaining how their experience and knowledge are relevant to the student&#8217;s research project.<\/p><p>Both the current advisor and the new co-advisor must accept the co-advisorship request from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upm.es\/thesis\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Thesis<\/strong><\/a>.
